Kwabena is a true story of fear, courage and spiritual rebirth in remote northern Ghana. It begins as a young African orphan, Kwabena, struggles to free himself from an abusive uncle. Fearing death, he escapes from his village only to fall into the hands of another uncle who is a widely feared tribal witch doctor. Here he is introduced to potent witchcraft and becomes a fearsome young man in his own right - until he meets Yesu. Against all odds, Kwabena escapes death, finds new friends and leaves Africa to study in a distant land - Canada. But in the end returns to his homeland and his village as a highly respected friend of the poor.
David Mensah - the boy Kwabena - is one of the great Africans of our time and a prolific speaker, widely sought after by universities, churches and schools. His message is one of hope. Dr. Mensah holds a Ph.D from the University of Toronto. He and his wife, Brenda and their three daughters all live in Northern Ghana where David directs the Northern Empowerment Association (NEA), a development organization that has become the model for other initiatives across Africa.

"I met David Mensah nearly twenty years ago on a hot August day in Toronto. It was rumoured on campus that a new African student, who had arrived from Ghana to study at Ontario Bible College, was afraid to come out of his room. I knocked on his dormitory door and met a brother in Christ whom I would grow to deeply love and respect. The immensity of this man's identity, however concealed by the shy demeanour of a half-starved African boy who looked like a bewildered refugee locked in a prison. Little did I know then what an extraordinary person I was meeting.
This book is his story, told in his own African voice, revealing the depth and power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He invites you into a harsh tribal life in northern Ghana, with its dark superstitions and brutal hardships. Terrorized by his uncle and tutored in the occult, David's life appears to hang by a thread. But God breaks in on this wild African boy who is strangely affected by a Muslim holy man who speaks of one name,"Jesus."
From scrounging for food in the rotting garbage of Tamale to completing a PhD at St.Michael's College in Toronto, David Mensah takes you on a journey of faith that will remind you of Abraham in the wilderness and Joesph in Pharoah's court. David is a modern example of the heroes of the faith described in the eleventh chapter of Hebrews. Who could have imagined that the lonely African student I met that day would return to Ghana with his beautiful wife and three daughters to carry on a holistic ministry to his native tribe ? Who would have thought that this emaciated, homesick African brother would be used of God to fill the stomachs and souls of his fellow Africans ? This is a story that needs to be told, for it is part of God's great salvation history story. I invite you to meet David Mensah."
